Graceful Life in California

(1)Breakfast with Home-Made Muffins

Maya Good morning, Jon-san.
Holtzman
Good morning, Maya and Grace. Did you have a good night’s rest?
Maya
Yes, we did. Oh, those beautiful flowers outside!
Holtzman
Yes. Our gardener does a good job on our patio. We sometimes barbecue out there. You can step out and look at our backyard later. Please sit there by the window. Grace can sit on the floor next to Maya, okay?
Maya
Mmm... the coffee smells nice!
Holtzman
Oh, sure. Martha, would you get Maya some coffee, please.
Martha
Good morning, Miss.
Maya

Good morning, Martha.

Martha Here is your coffee. Cream and sugar are in those white pitchers. How would you like your eggs done?
Grace

Maya
Ah… Over easy, please?
Martha

Sure. I think a blueberry muffin might go well with that coffee.

Maya
Ah... blueberry muffin? Yes, please. And do you have some milk for my cat?
Martha
Sure, we do. Also, I got some cat food for Grace last night. I’ll be right back.
Grace
Maya
Over easy, sunny-side up, scrambled...
Holtzman
Poached, and boiled. Would you like something else?
Maya No, I was just talking to myself... By the way, my room is so nice. I couldn’t see well last night, but this morning, I saw a Tiffany lamp, pictures on the walls, and a beautiful bed cover...
Holtzman It has its own walk-in closet and bathroom, too.
Maya Yes, the bathroom is beautiful and so large.
Holtzman
It was actually our guest room and we rarely use it now. Well, when we all finish breakfast, why don’t I show you around the house.
Grace
Martha
Here you go, Miss. Fried eggs and fresh homemade muffins. And here is something for your cat, too.
Maya
Thank you, Martha. And please call me Maya.
Martha
Okay, Maya.
Maya
I’m sorry that I was so sleepy last night at dinner.
Holtzman
I know. It’s jet-lag. I remember I also had a hard time when I came back from Japan. You should take it easy for a few days.
Maya
“Jet-lag?”
Grace
Maya
Yes, jet-lag. I think I have jet-lag. Do you go to Japan often?
Holtzman
No. Not anymore. But I hope I’ll get to go there more often.
Grace
“get to go there”“get to go there”はこの場合、「何々できるようになる」という意味だから、「もっと頻繁に日本に行けるようになれたらいいのに」って言ってるの。
Maya
Oh, yes. I hope you will. Please stay at my house when you come to Japan.
Grace
I hope he’s not connected to the Mafia.
Maya
Grace
Holtzman
I beg your pardon? Did you say Mafia?
Maya
No, no. No Mafia. I was talking to my cat in Japanese. This “muffin” is so delicious!
Grace
Watch your “L” sound, Maya. It’s “de-li-cious.”
Holtzman
Martha makes her muffins from scratch and she is proud of them. But be careful. Martha wants you to clean your plate. I mean she does not like to see any food left on your plate. She was raised in a strict family in England.
Grace
Maya
Martha
Are you all finished or would you like another muffin?
Maya No, thank you. I’m full. It was so delicious. Thank you, Martha.
Martha It’s my pleasure. Especially when I see your plate clean.
Holtzman Now, let me show you around. I suppose Grace wants to join us.
